Oak Hill Cemetery and Mount Pleasant Cemetery
Oak Hill Cemetery and Mount Cemetery collectively serves the Smithville community and contain graves of many of the town's residents, reflecting a rich tapestry of the town's history and local heritage. They feature a variety of headstones and memorials, possibly with older sections that include graves from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Oak Hill Cemetery was established in the late 1890's by early settlers in the area, most of who were probably associated with the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas railroads that were being built at the time in what would eventually become the incorporated City of Smithville in 1895.
For many years, the cemetery was under the auspices of the Smithville Cemetery Association and remained so until July 10, 1936 when the Association presented the deed to the property to the City.
Also presented at that time were meager records and maps available at that time. Time proved that the records and maps were not completely accurate; from those records a master card file was developed in the 1960's. There was approximately ten acres of land in the original site. At some point in time, it was named Oak Hill.
The 21st century approached, the remaining space was very limited and in 2000 an additional 27 acres (not all totally usable land) adjoining the present cemetery on the south was purchased from the family of Laura Remet. This acreage is in the process of being cleared and will be developed in sections.
A group of volunteer, chaired by Virginia Guyton, researched records and walked the premises to bring the records and maps up to date, as accurately as possible.
This group of volunteers worked for over five years to compile the information we have today. Melody Bruner, P.E.. an engineer specializing in data of this nature was contracted by the City of Smithville to guide the development of the new map.

The City of Smithville operates and maintains both cemeteries. If you are a person living within the City limits and on the ad Valorem tax roll, the cost is $1,000 per space. If you are not on the ad valorem tax roll your lot is $2,000 per space. You can purchase cemetery spaces and pay internment fees at City Hall.
